This is the last episode of Season 12 (that is, for the year of 2015). I'll be taking some time off at the start of the new year, and come back with new episodes in season 13, probably ramping back up in February 2016.
This episode features They Might Be Giants' "Long White Beard" which Kelli and I made the music video for! Be sure to check it out, and also watch the "behind the scenes" video we put together.
In case you missed it, listen to the special episode from 2007 about how Kelli and I met at a TMBG concert.
The music I talked over this episode was "Witch Dub" by La Femme, "Door No. 2" by Cat's Eyes, and "Paris Paris" by Cha Cha Guitri. This wasn't a Special Paris episode, but it really should have been.
This episode features a clip from Pete Holmes wonderful podcast You Made it Weird, with special guest Ellie Kemper (from The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) where they discuss juices and healthy vs. American living.
This episode features a clip from Alexander Payne's great movie The Descendants. You should also listen to this great segment from NPR's Morning Edition about Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, even though I couldn't figure out how to shoehorn a clip from it into the show.
This episode features a clip from Sam Harris’ always interesting Waking Up podcast where he expresses astonishment at the silence from the media in response to the remarkably unethical views on abortion that many of the GOP presidential candidates express. Also, a few “Musician Jokes” from Prairie Home Companion’s Pretty Good Jokes album.
This episode features clips from the 2014 documentary R.E.M. by MTV. I wanted to include clips from Episode 124: Longbox of the podcast 99% Invisible about how the packaging for R.E.M.'s album Out of Time changed American politics, but I couldn't find a short enough soundbite for this already over-long episode. So just go listen to the whole thing if you haven't—it's great!
This episode features a clip from Louis CK's new comedy album Live at Madison Square Garden (buy online) where he talks about taking his kids to activities like tap dancing or soccer… or school.
This episode features a clip from one of the last few episode's of Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart during which Jon discusses how the GOP's self-diagnosed previous electoral failings are perfectly embodied by their current front-runner in the polls (meaningless early-stage) Republican Primary for the 2016 Presidential Election.
This episode features a clip from the monologue on this past week's Real Time with Bill Maher, where Bill recaps the heaps of incredibly big news in America: SCOTUS Rulings legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states, upholding the Affordable Care Act, and the removal of the racist symbol of the Old South, the Confederate Flag.
This episode features a clip from HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher where Bill reads from Be Still My Bleeding Heart, a new erotic fiction novel specifically for liberals.
This episode features a clip from Louis CK's monologue during his recent appearance on the season finale of Saturday Night Live. In it he analogizes his children to never ending conflict in the middle east. Watch the whole, hilarious routine here.
This episode features a clip of Chilly Gonzales' Pop Music Master Class series where he deconstructs Daft Punk's "Get Lucky", and also a short clip from the beginning of an incredibly bad Nellie McKay interview.
This episode features clips about equality for gays which for some reason is still an issue. First a clip from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart's coverage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in Indiana. Then a clip from this past weekend's White House Correspondents Dinner where President Obama cracked wise around issues of gay rights.
This episode features a clip from HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher discussing Andrew Jarecki’s recent 6-part documentary series of Robert Durst, The Jinx.
This episode features a clip from the audiobook version of Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot.
This episode features a clip from Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where Jon is responding to the right-wing media's reaction to news that he will be stepping down as host of the show sometime this year. I only put on a minute of it, but the whole segment is glorious. Don't miss the 50-lies in 6 seconds vine they put together.
In recognition of Saturday Night Live's 40th Anniversary, this episode features a couple of my favorite old SNL commercial parodies, which have been impossible to watch until recently, including Wilson Countersink Flanges, and Bad Idea Jeans. And it's not on the show, but who could forget the awesome classic Leevi's Three Legged Jeans?!
